Worktop installation in Pimlico

Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.

Pimlico kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Cubitt stucco terrace conversion1950s Churchill Gardens block1970s Lillington Gardens brick estate

Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.

Conversion flats in the stucco terraces have small kitchens carved out of grand rooms, typically a 2.4m galley with high ceilings and a cornice cut short. The post-war estate flats have purpose-built kitchens of about 2.5m by 2m with a fitted larder - workable, but there is no island going in either.

Street parking is permit and pay-by-phone with a lot of resident pressure, and the wider stucco streets have suspended bays for other trades most weeks.

Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. The day is planned backwards from the hall. That is the shape of the day.

What we are usually templating in is Cubitt stucco terrace conversion, 1950s Churchill Gardens block and 1970s Lillington Gardens brick estate. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Estate blocks are the constraint - low-rise sections with no lift at all, walkway access, and communal doors that must not be wedged.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Post-war estate kitchens use non-standard cabinet depths and out-of-square corners from the original concrete frame - template every corner, do not assume 90 degrees.

The shape of the run

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always.

Getting stone into a Pimlico kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Pimlico

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Pimlico?

Yes. Pimlico is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW1V. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Enforcement zones rarely accept a trade van unloading stone as an exemption, so this gets sorted before the date is confirmed rather than argued about afterwards. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Pimlico change how worktop installation works?

Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. The slow parts are slow for a reason. Post-war estate kitchens use non-standard cabinet depths and out-of-square corners from the original concrete frame - template every corner, do not assume 90 degrees.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Pimlico?

Estate blocks are the constraint - low-rise sections with no lift at all, walkway access, and communal doors that must not be wedged. Street parking is permit and pay-by-phone with a lot of resident pressure, and the wider stucco streets have suspended bays for other trades most weeks. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop installation common in Pimlico?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

Why do two Pimlico kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Eased in, never forced. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
