Worktop replacement in Frognal

Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.

Frognal kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.

Big detached and semi-detached houses where the kitchen is a large rear room or a purpose-built extension, so you are specifying a 4m-plus perimeter with a full island and often a separate utility or pantry run.

A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. Clients here more often want the same stone carried across island, worktops and a full-height splashback.

These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. A full stone piece is several times the weight of the laminate coming out, and there is rarely room to turn it on a half-landing. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

The mix here is large detached Victorian villa, Arts and Crafts house, Edwardian house and 1930s block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.

The shape of the run

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into the room

Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Frognal

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Frognal on your patch?

Yes. Frognal is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW3. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop replacement in Frognal be any different from anywhere else?

The original kitchen was a small service room, so what is there now is a knock-through and the junction between the two floors is rarely level. A full stone piece is several times the weight of the laminate coming out, and there is rarely room to turn it on a half-landing. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Frognal?

Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you get much worktop replacement work in Frognal?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Where a single building holds several small kitchens, the work arrives as one job rather than four, and it should be cut off the same slab run so the batches genuinely match. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Frognal?

Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. Found at template, not on fit day. Get the managing agent's or freeholder's approval and the permitted hours confirmed beforehand, and agree with the porter who protects the communal carpet, stonework and lift. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
