Splashbacks and upstands in Frognal
Stone taken up the wall, cut from the same slab run as your worktop so the batch actually matches.
Frognal kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
This is a logistics job before it is a stone job, and the lift car is usually the single biggest constraint on the design. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Same slab run, same day, same batch.
Big detached and semi-detached houses where the kitchen is a large rear room or a purpose-built extension, so you are specifying a 4m-plus perimeter with a full island and often a separate utility or pantry run.
Clients here more often want the same stone carried across island, worktops and a full-height splashback. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van.
Inter-war purpose-built blocks have curved external walls and steel windows, so a run along an outside wall is following a genuine curve rather than a bow. Boxed risers break the run into returns, and every return is a separate piece with its own mitred corner. Decided before fabrication starts.
What we are usually templating in is large detached Victorian villa, Arts and Crafts house, Edwardian house and 1930s block. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
period detached houses and villas
Getting stone into the room
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking.

What gets asked for here
This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

The building, and what it does to the job
Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.
Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Frognal
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Frognal?
Yes. Frognal is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW3. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Frognal change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. Boxed risers break the run into returns, and every return is a separate piece with its own mitred corner. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Frognal?
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Joint positions follow from that. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is Frognal really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Same batch, same run, same day.
Why do two Frognal kitchens the same size price differently?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. The riser boxing must be finished in its final form and any access panel positions agreed before the template, since the stone is set out around them. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The wall has to be ready.
