Worktop replacement in Eltham
Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.
Eltham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
Overwhelmingly 1930s semis — a kitchen of roughly 2.4m by 3m at the back with a garden door and a separate dining room in front. The standard job is a rear or side-return extension that merges the two into one long room with a 3.5m to 4m run and an island.
The classic Eltham job is templating a new extension where the old back wall has come out — get the steel-supported opening measured properly, it is rarely square to the new build.
A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What is under the old top is the real question.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1930s semi, Edwardian terrace, postwar infill and 1960s flats. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
Getting stone into the room
Suburban streets with front drives and dropped kerbs on most roads, so the van usually gets within a few metres of the door; the stretches around the High Street and the station are the exception.

The building, and what it does to the job
Exposed structure means the back edge is not a straight line at all, and a scribe of fifteen or twenty millimetres across a run is normal. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. Found at template, not on fit day.

What gets asked for here
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Eltham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Eltham?
Yes. Eltham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE9. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Eltham change how worktop replacement works?
Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What is under the old top is the real question. The classic Eltham job is templating a new extension where the old back wall has come out — get the steel-supported opening measured properly, it is rarely square to the new build.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Eltham?
Suburban streets with front drives and dropped kerbs on most roads, so the van usually gets within a few metres of the door; the stretches around the High Street and the station are the exception. Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Do you get much worktop replacement work in Eltham?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A plumber either side of us. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
Why do two Eltham kitchens the same size price differently?
An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Where a column lands in the run the template plots its actual outline so the stone is cut to fit around it rather than stopped short and filled. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Sound carcasses are the condition.
