What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian cottage1930s terracepost-war infill flat

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.

Older, smaller cottages mixed with interwar terraces, so ceiling heights and window positions vary house to house and there is no standard layout to work from. Kitchens are commonly 2.4m to 3m single runs with a door at each end, and owners keep the units and change surfaces.

A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. The day is planned backwards from the hall. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian cottage, 1930s terrace and post-war infill flat. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Low door heads and tight halls mean measuring the diagonal clearance at every doorway on the route, not just the kitchen entrance.

The hallway turn and the door width, which cap the longest single piece we can physically get to the kitchen regardless of what the run measures.

Getting stone into the room

Narrow streets on the slope below the hill, kerbside parking only on the older cottages, and low door heads on the Victorian stock that make tilting a slab through a doorway awkward.

The shape of the run

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat.

What gets asked for here

This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Questions

Worktop installation in Roxeth

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Roxeth?

Yes. Roxeth is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA2. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Roxeth change how worktop installation works?

A small room puts the sink, hob and tap cut-outs close together on one short length, and the bridge of stone left between them decides whether it can be cut in one piece. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. That is the shape of the day. Low door heads and tight halls mean measuring the diagonal clearance at every doorway on the route, not just the kitchen entrance.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Roxeth?

Narrow streets on the slope below the hill, kerbside parking only on the older cottages, and low door heads on the Victorian stock that make tilting a slab through a doorway awkward. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. None of it is worked out on the doorstep. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you get much worktop installation work in Roxeth?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. The prep list is not optional. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

Why do two Roxeth kitchens the same size price differently?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
