Roxeth kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian cottage1930s terracepost-war infill flat

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Joins over gables, always.

Older, smaller cottages mixed with interwar terraces, so ceiling heights and window positions vary house to house and there is no standard layout to work from. Kitchens are commonly 2.4m to 3m single runs with a door at each end, and owners keep the units and change surfaces.

Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. The bench proves it before the van moves.

The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian cottage, 1930s terrace and post-war infill flat. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Low door heads and tight halls mean measuring the diagonal clearance at every doorway on the route, not just the kitchen entrance.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

The shape of the run

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Every join sits over a gable.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Roxeth

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Roxeth, or just list it?

Yes. Roxeth is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA2. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop fabrication in Roxeth?

A two-up two-down has a kitchen that was never designed to be one, so the run is short, the ceiling is low and every millimetre of depth gets argued over. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Low door heads and tight halls mean measuring the diagonal clearance at every doorway on the route, not just the kitchen entrance.

Is access a problem in Roxeth?

Narrow streets on the slope below the hill, kerbside parking only on the older cottages, and low door heads on the Victorian stock that make tilting a slab through a doorway awkward. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Roxeth?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. What decides the price of a worktop in Roxeth?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
