Worktop templating in Putney Heath
A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.
Putney Heath kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Floors have usually settled towards the rear, so levelling means packing the units before the stone beds down. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.
Postwar blocks around the heath have separate kitchens of a fixed size with a sink under the window and a hatch to the dining area, and the usual work is a like-for-like top with matching upstands. The detached houses backing onto the heath take larger open-plan schemes with an island.
Hatch openings between kitchen and dining room mean the worktop often has to be finished on two faces and polished on the exposed edge inside the opening. The blocks are set in landscaped grounds with parking courts some distance from the entrances, so there is a long paved carry before you reach any lift or stair.
Base units from the seventies and eighties are often only 500mm deep, so a 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors want checking against it. The scribe at worktop height differs from the one at plinth level, and only the worktop line matters. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
What we are usually templating in is Interwar detached, 1950s and 60s purpose-built block and Postwar estate housing. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Appliances on site, not on order.
This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Questions
Worktop templating in Putney Heath
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Putney Heath on your patch?
Yes. Putney Heath is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW15. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop templating in Putney Heath be any different from anywhere else?
Base units from the seventies and eighties are often only 500mm deep, so a 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors want checking against it. The scribe at worktop height differs from the one at plinth level, and only the worktop line matters. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Hatch openings between kitchen and dining room mean the worktop often has to be finished on two faces and polished on the exposed edge inside the opening.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Putney Heath?
The blocks are set in landscaped grounds with parking courts some distance from the entrances, so there is a long paved carry before you reach any lift or stair. Lifts in these blocks are small passenger cars that will not take a full slab upright. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for. Is Putney Heath really a worktop templating area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Units fitted, fixed and level first. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Putney Heath?
A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. The laser plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Units fixed, packed level and pushed as far back as the leaning wall allows, walls made good to final thickness with tiling left until after the worktop, and the sink, tap and hob on site so cut-outs are set from the real items. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. Appliances on site, not on order.
