Splashbacks and upstands in Putney Heath

Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. One trip is always better than three. The window sits in the middle of the run over the sink, and its board and cill set the limit on how tall an upstand can be. Hatch openings between kitchen and dining room mean the worktop often has to be finished on two faces and polished on the exposed edge inside the opening.

Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. Boiler position, flue and any pipework drops must be settled and the wall skimmed level before templating the splashback run. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Decided before fabrication, not after.
