Worktop replacement in Merton Park
Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.
Merton Park kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Long perimeter runs and an island mean level has to hold across the whole room rather than along any one wall. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.
The Arts and Crafts stock has deep plan houses where the kitchen sits behind the dining room, and owners tend to open the two into one long room rather than build out, keeping a run along the outside wall plus a dresser-style block. Cabinetry is usually in-frame timber, so the stone gets a heavier profile and a deeper overhang than a modern slab kitchen. Conservation area rules make skips and long-term van standing awkward, and the estate is characterised by clipped hedges and narrow gated front paths that a two-man carry cannot get a wide slab through squarely. The tram line splits the area, so the approach has to be planned from the right side of the crossing.
Original joinery is deep and stands proud of the plaster, so the run is plotted to the units rather than to the wall behind them. The old island top is frequently sitting on units that were never fixed down, which is fine for laminate and not for stone. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
What turns up on the job sheets is John Innes Arts and Crafts house, Edwardian villa and 1930s semi. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop installation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

The building, and what it does to the job
Rooms here are rarely square — the original walls run out by 20mm or more corner to corner, so template the full room rather than assuming a 90 degree return at the dresser end.
Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. The laminate has been covering it up.

Getting stone into a Merton Park kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Merton Park
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Merton Park?
Yes. Merton Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW19. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Merton Park change how worktop replacement works?
Original joinery is deep and stands proud of the plaster, so the run is plotted to the units rather than to the wall behind them. These are the multi-piece jobs: long runs, a large island and often a range cooker that cannot be moved, so the stone is templated in several pieces and how the vein runs across the joins matters. What is under the old top is the real question. Rooms here are rarely square — the original walls run out by 20mm or more corner to corner, so template the full room rather than assuming a 90 degree return at the dresser end.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Merton Park?
Conservation area rules make skips and long-term van standing awkward, and the estate is characterised by clipped hedges and narrow gated front paths that a two-man carry cannot get a wide slab through squarely. The tram line splits the area, so the approach has to be planned from the right side of the crossing. Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. It sets what the day actually looks like. Is Merton Park really a worktop replacement area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Why do two Merton Park kitchens the same size price differently?
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a fitter or joiner fix and level the island units beforehand, and get the sink, taps, hob and any range on site before templating so we cut to the actual appliances. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
