Worktop templating in Little Heath

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

Little Heath kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semiinter-war terracepost-war infill

These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Two to three hours on site with a laser, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

Quiet residential streets, most with a dropped kerb and off-street space, but the roads feeding onto the A12 and Whalebone Lane get busy and are no place to leave a van blocking traffic. Budgets tend to be sensible rather than showy, so the common job is a good-quality quartz top on existing or mid-range new units with matching upstands rather than a full slab splashback. Inter-war semis on the Redbridge side of the Chadwell Heath boundary, with the standard back-of-house kitchen and larder that has usually been opened up to the dining room.

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

The mix here is 1930s semi, inter-war terrace and post-war infill. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

1930s and inter-war semis

The building, and what it does to the job

Upstands rather than full splashbacks are the norm here, and the walls behind the old tiling are rarely flat, so we allow for scribing the upstand to the wall line.

Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. That is why the visit takes two or three hours.

Questions

Worktop templating in Little Heath

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Little Heath on your patch?

Yes. Little Heath is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM6, IG3. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop templating in Little Heath be any different from anywhere else?

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. No stone is ever cut from a plan. Upstands rather than full splashbacks are the norm here, and the walls behind the old tiling are rarely flat, so we allow for scribing the upstand to the wall line.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Little Heath?

Quiet residential streets, most with a dropped kerb and off-street space, but the roads feeding onto the A12 and Whalebone Lane get busy and are no place to leave a van blocking traffic. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you get much worktop templating work in Little Heath?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Little Heath?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the laser plots the intermediate points. The laser plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. No stone is cut from a plan.
