Worktop templating in Hainault

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

A post-war London County Council out-county estate, so the housing is laid out in repeating blocks of terraces and semis with small original kitchens designed as a working scullery rather than a living space. The usual job is taking out the dividing wall to the dining room, running a 3m L and adding a peninsula where the wall stood; because the layouts repeat street to street, the same kitchen shape comes up again and again.

Walls are dense block or in-situ concrete with a bonded plaster, so the bottom course of tiles brings plaster with it when the old top comes off. Concrete and dense block walls in ex-council stock cannot be chased back or packed out to suit, so the template takes the wall exactly as it is and the stone carries the scribe. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

What we are usually templating in is late-1940s to 1950s LCC cottage estate, ex-council terrace and ex-council semi. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Genuinely good access by London standards — verges, open frontages, plenty of hardstanding and unrestricted parking on most of the estate roads, plus rear access paths between blocks.

What gets asked for here

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop replacement. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The building, and what it does to the job

Estate houses often have out-of-plumb walls and old plaster on the original scullery side, so we template rather than measure and expect to trim the scribe on site.

The shape of the run

Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room.

Questions

Worktop templating in Hainault

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Hainault?

Yes. Hainault is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG6. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Hainault change how worktop templating works?

Many have been extended at the rear since being sold, so the kitchen is half original and half newer with a floor junction between the two. Carcass heights are read individually, since legs bottoming out on concrete mean the units do not share one plane. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Estate houses often have out-of-plumb walls and old plaster on the original scullery side, so we template rather than measure and expect to trim the scribe on site.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Hainault?

Genuinely good access by London standards — verges, open frontages, plenty of hardstanding and unrestricted parking on most of the estate roads, plus rear access paths between blocks. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop templating common in Hainault?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

Why do two Hainault kitchens the same size price differently?

The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Plotted, not estimated. Every base unit fixed to the wall, packed and levelled with the laser, and any dry-lining or patching completed - the template reads the wall face it is given, so that has to be the finished face. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Appliances on site, not on order.
