Splashbacks and upstands in Benhilton

Stone taken up the wall, cut from the same slab run as your worktop so the batch actually matches.

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terraceVictorian villainter-war semipost-war flats

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Splashbacks come off the same slab run as the tops, which means the decision has to be made before fabrication starts. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.

Older stock on the hill north of the town centre with narrow rear kitchens in back additions, typically 2.6m of run with a boiler cupboard eating one corner. Some of the larger villas have been opened up into full kitchen-diners with a peninsula.

Boiler cupboards in the corner of these back additions are usually staying put, so we template around them and put the joint at the cupboard return.

The rear wall is usually a single brick thick and has been rendered, patched and re-rendered, so it bows in and out along the length of the run. Where a client wants a full-height piece behind the hob, it usually sits in the old chimney recess, and that recess is rarely square top to bottom or side to side, so it has to be templated as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

On these streets the housing is Victorian terrace, Victorian villa, inter-war semi and post-war flats. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Streets climb steeply from the town centre with parking on both sides and no off-street space on the terraces, so the carry is up a hill and then in through the front door.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

The shape of the run

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Benhilton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Benhilton?

Yes. Benhilton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM1. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Benhilton change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

The rear wall is usually a single brick thick and has been rendered, patched and re-rendered, so it bows in and out along the length of the run. Where a client wants a full-height piece behind the hob, it usually sits in the old chimney recess, and that recess is rarely square top to bottom or side to side, so it has to be templated as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. Boiler cupboards in the corner of these back additions are usually staying put, so we template around them and put the joint at the cupboard return.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Benhilton?

Streets climb steeply from the town centre with parking on both sides and no off-street space on the terraces, so the carry is up a hill and then in through the front door. Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in Benhilton?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Sockets final before template. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.

Why do two Benhilton kitchens the same size price differently?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Same slab run as the tops.
