Splashbacks and upstands in Aldgate

Stone taken up the wall, cut from the same slab run as your worktop so the batch actually matches.

Aldgate kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

modern residential toweroffice to residential conversion1980s-90s apartment blockmixed-use development over retail

Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. Socket positions, sill heights and wall flatness are the three things that settle this, and all three are properties of the building. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.

Newer towers on the eastern edge give standard developer kitchens - a 3-3.4m run against the riser plus an island of about 2m, with an induction hob and a recirculating extract that fixes the hob position.

Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves. The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Straight swaps onto existing carcases still need the carcase levels checked, because developer units settle and a 3m top will rock on units that were only shimmed once. Many of these are being upgraded from original laminate or composite to quartz within a few years of completion, so the job is a straight swap onto existing carcases.

Piece size is set by the lift car and the entrance dogleg, which routinely turns a two-piece kitchen into a three-piece one. The plasterboard is genuinely flat here, so a full-height splashback sits well and a slim upstand looks almost redundant — but the sockets are the problem, because they are set out to the developer's original kitchen and often land at odd heights or right on a joint line. Decided before fabrication starts.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to modern residential tower, office to residential conversion, 1980s-90s apartment block and mixed-use development over retail. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. Corners get their own pieces.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into a Aldgate kitchen

The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Aldgate

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Aldgate?

Yes. Aldgate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC3N, EC3A. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. That is why they are crated the way they are. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Aldgate change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

Boxed soil stacks and ventilation ducts run behind the units, and the boxing depth changes between floor level and worktop height. Every socket, switch and any USB point has to be cut out of the stone to the actual measured position, so the template has to be taken with the faceplates off and the back boxes visible. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Straight swaps onto existing carcases still need the carcase levels checked, because developer units settle and a 3m top will rock on units that were only shimmed once.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Aldgate?

The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. Joint positions follow from that. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you get much worktop splashbacks & upstands work in Aldgate?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Sockets final before template.

Why do two Aldgate kitchens the same size price differently?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. Any socket you intend to move must be moved and re-plastered before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece of stone. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The wall has to be ready.
