Worktop templating in Wimbledon

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

What the kitchens here are actually like

Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.

Around the Broadway and the streets running up towards the Ridgway you get Victorian and Edwardian houses where the original back addition has been opened into the rear reception, so the kitchen ends up L-shaped with a run down the flank wall and a peninsula where the old wall stood.

The town centre one-way system and the bus lanes on the Broadway leave almost no legal standing time, and the residential streets either side are permit-only with short single-yellow windows. Newer apartment blocks above the town centre are mostly straight galley runs with a breakfast bar returning off the end.

A bay-fronted terrace has a long hall running past the stairs to the kitchen, so the hall turn caps the piece length before the run length does. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the laser picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

The mix here is Late Victorian terrace, Edwardian semi, 1930s mansion block and 2000s town-centre apartment. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

The knock-through peninsula is where the money and the risk sit — you are butting new stone against a wall the builder made good after removing a chimney breast, so template after plastering, never before.

Getting stone into the room

Anything going into a flat above the shops is a stair-only carry from a shared street door.

Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The laser records it along with everything else.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into a Wimbledon kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Wimbledon

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Wimbledon?

Yes. Wimbledon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW19. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Wimbledon change how worktop templating works?

The bay at the front and the back addition at the rear were built to different standards, and the kitchen is nearly always in the weaker of the two. The laser plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. Two to three hours, once the units are in. The knock-through peninsula is where the money and the risk sit — you are butting new stone against a wall the builder made good after removing a chimney breast, so template after plastering, never before.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Wimbledon?

The town centre one-way system and the bus lanes on the Broadway leave almost no legal standing time, and the residential streets either side are permit-only with short single-yellow windows. Anything going into a flat above the shops is a stair-only carry from a shared street door. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you do much worktop templating around Wimbledon?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Wimbledon kitchens the same size price differently?

Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Appliances on site, not on order.
