Stanmore kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s detachedlarge post-war detachedperiod houses on Stanmore Hillgated modern development

Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The drawing decides it before the saw does.

Long gravel or block-paved driveways with gates and often a turning circle, so vehicles get very close, but the internal carry from the front door to the rear kitchen can be 15m or more with a hallway turn. The largest houses in the borough, where kitchens are designed rooms with a 3m or larger island, a second prep sink, integrated coffee and wine units, and a separate utility and pantry that each carry their own stone. Kosher and multi-kitchen arrangements are not unusual, meaning two hobs, two sinks and duplicated runs to keep meat and dairy preparation separate. Separate meat and dairy runs mean planning two identical worktops from the same batch so the colour matches across the room, and that is a slab reservation decision, not a fitting decision.

Houses of this period came with generous garages and utility rooms, so a second short run of stone is often part of the same job. What does drive the bench work is the knocked-through kitchen-diner: the return worktop and any peninsula are seen end-on from the dining side, so we nest the pieces so the veining carries across the internal corner in the same direction rather than turning through ninety degrees. Settled on the drawing, cut once.

On these streets the housing is 1930s detached, large post-war detached, period houses on Stanmore Hill and gated modern development. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb.

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Stanmore on your patch?

Yes. Stanmore is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA7. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop fabrication in Stanmore be any different from anywhere else?

A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. What does drive the bench work is the knocked-through kitchen-diner: the return worktop and any peninsula are seen end-on from the dining side, so we nest the pieces so the veining carries across the internal corner in the same direction rather than turning through ninety degrees. The bench proves it before the van moves. Separate meat and dairy runs mean planning two identical worktops from the same batch so the colour matches across the room, and that is a slab reservation decision, not a fitting decision.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Stanmore?

Long gravel or block-paved driveways with gates and often a turning circle, so vehicles get very close, but the internal carry from the front door to the rear kitchen can be 15m or more with a hallway turn. Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. It is settled on the bench, not on site. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop fabrication common in Stanmore?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Stanmore?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Machined to the real line. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
