Worktop replacement in St Helier
Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.
St Helier kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.
A planned inter-war cottage estate with a small number of repeating house types, so the kitchens are near-identical: a narrow room about 2.4m long with a pantry, a copper or boiler recess and a back door into a side lobby. Most owners want the lobby wall out to gain a return.
The repeating house types mean stock templates are tempting, but the pantry has been removed in about half of them, so every kitchen still gets measured on site.
Walls are dense block or in-situ concrete with a bonded plaster, so the bottom course of tiles brings plaster with it when the old top comes off. The plaster is bonded straight onto the concrete, so the bottom course of tiles tends to bring plaster with it when the old top comes off, leaving a rough band behind the upstand. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
The mix here is 1930s cottage estate semi, 1930s estate terrace, estate maisonette and post-war infill. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
Getting stone into the room
Wide estate avenues with verges and unrestricted parking, but rear gardens are reached through communal alleys between houses that are too narrow for stone, so it is always through the front.

The building, and what it does to the job
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day.
Boxed-in soil stacks and service risers in the corner of the run, which eat into the worktop depth and have to be scribed around rather than cut square.

Questions
Worktop replacement in St Helier
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover St Helier?
Yes. St Helier is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM5, SM4. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in St Helier change how worktop replacement works?
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Plaster bonded straight onto concrete comes away with the bottom course of tiles, leaving a band behind the upstand. What is under the old top is the real question. The repeating house types mean stock templates are tempting, but the pantry has been removed in about half of them, so every kitchen still gets measured on site.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in St Helier?
Wide estate avenues with verges and unrestricted parking, but rear gardens are reached through communal alleys between houses that are too narrow for stone, so it is always through the front. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is St Helier mostly worktop replacement work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
Why do two St Helier kitchens the same size price differently?
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Sort a parking bay or permit near the entrance, confirm the lift is in service and get us the door codes, and tell us about any asbestos survey on the flat before we start stripping out. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Plumber either side of us.
