Worktop installation in Selsdon
Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.
Selsdon kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Built largely as a 1930s estate, so the semis share a footprint with a small rear kitchen that is usually extended to the side or rear for a kitchen-diner with a peninsula. The detached houses on the higher roads run to proper islands and separate utilities.
These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
The mix here is 1930s estate semi, 1930s detached, post-war Selsdon Vale housing and bungalow. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Steep front drives here are the recurring nuisance, because a loaded trolley wants to run away downhill and we end up hand-carrying pieces we could otherwise wheel.

Getting stone into the room
Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb.
Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. We would rather ask than guess.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop design & quotation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Selsdon
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Selsdon, or just list it?
Yes. Selsdon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR2. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop installation in Selsdon?
The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. The carry is the easy part; the plaster around the old breast and the packing over a moved floor are not. That is the shape of the day. Steep front drives here are the recurring nuisance, because a loaded trolley wants to run away downhill and we end up hand-carrying pieces we could otherwise wheel.
Is access a problem in Selsdon?
Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Do you do much worktop installation around Selsdon?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave.
What decides the price of a worktop in Selsdon?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. One visit, our own installers.
