Walls are thick, lime-plastered and built in a soft brick, so they take a scribe well and take a fixing badly. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. The island pieces routinely exceed what six men can hand-carry down a domestic stair, so budget for glass suction and a stair crawler rather than assuming extra labour will solve it.

Several roads are private or gated with gravel drives and speed humps, and gravel is the enemy of an A-frame trolley, so the load usually has to be carried from the road edge. Where houses have their own side gate to the garden it is worth using it, because the main staircases here are wide but turn twice and the balustrades are frequently listed and cannot be unbolted. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted. Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. It is the slow part of the day and it should be. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. Protection goes down first.
