What the kitchens here are actually like

1890s-1900s Corbett Estate terraceEdwardian terracepostwar infill

Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Two to three hours on site with a laser, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

The Corbett Estate is thousands of near-identical late-Victorian terraces: the original kitchen sits in the back addition, and by now most have a side-return or full-width rear extension turning it into a kitchen-diner with a 3.5m to 4.5m run and an island. Because the houses repeat, so do the layouts.

Repeating house types make it predictable, but those side passages are typically under 800mm — measure before assuming a slab goes round the back.

The rear extension is frequently original rather than added, which means it is solidly built and just as far out of square as the rest of the house. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the laser picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

On these streets the housing is 1890s-1900s Corbett Estate terrace, Edwardian terrace and postwar infill. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Long straight residential streets with permit parking and no off-street spaces, but most houses have a side alley or shared passage to the rear which is often the better route into an extension.

The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. That is part of what the visit is for.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop installation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Questions

Worktop templating in Hither Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Hither Green on your patch?

Yes. Hither Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE13, SE12. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop templating in Hither Green be any different from anywhere else?

Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Repeating house types make it predictable, but those side passages are typically under 800mm — measure before assuming a slab goes round the back.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Hither Green?

Long straight residential streets with permit parking and no off-street spaces, but most houses have a side alley or shared passage to the rear which is often the better route into an extension. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop templating common in Hither Green?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Appliances on site, not on order. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Hither Green?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. No stone is cut from a plan.
