Worktop fabrication in Highgate

Your slab nested, cut to the template drawing, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded.

Highgate kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Georgian village houseVictorian villa1920s mansion block1930s modernist block

Long perimeter runs and an island mean level has to hold across the whole room rather than along any one wall. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The drawing decides it before the saw does.

Village houses keep small compartmented kitchens with the original layout and chimney breasts still in place, while the interwar blocks have neat purpose-built galleys with fixed service positions. The larger detached villas on the hill are where islands actually happen, and almost always in a rear extension rather than the original room.

Very steep approach roads, narrow lanes parked both sides, and conservation-area frontages that sit close to the pavement with no lay-by.

A range or an Aga in an original recess is usually immovable, so the run is designed around it and the clearances come from the appliance. Islands here regularly run longer than a slab, so the join is nested to sit over an internal gable and positioned so it does not run through the hob cut-out, and on a heavily veined stone we nest the island and the back run together so the movement relates across the room. Settled on the drawing, cut once.

What we are usually templating in is Georgian village house, Victorian villa, 1920s mansion block and 1930s modernist block. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered from the Watford patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

The building, and what it does to the job

On the hill the walk from where the van can legally stop to the front door is often longer than the kitchen itself, so plan the lift and the carry order before anything comes off the vehicle.

Getting stone into the room

Several of the mansion blocks are walk-ups with a communal stair that turns twice before the first floor.

Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The load plan follows from it.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Highgate

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Highgate?

Yes. Highgate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N6, N19. It is run from the Watford side, covering Hertfordshire & North London. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Highgate change how worktop fabrication works?

A range or an Aga in an original recess is usually immovable, so the run is designed around it and the clearances come from the appliance. The joins here are chosen rather than forced, so they go where the veining and the gables want them. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. On the hill the walk from where the van can legally stop to the front door is often longer than the kitchen itself, so plan the lift and the carry order before anything comes off the vehicle.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Highgate?

Very steep approach roads, narrow lanes parked both sides, and conservation-area frontages that sit close to the pavement with no lay-by. Several of the mansion blocks are walk-ups with a communal stair that turns twice before the first floor. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. It is settled on the bench, not on site. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is Highgate really a worktop fabrication area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Same slab run, or it is not a match. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Nested for the job in front of us.

Why do two Highgate kitchens the same size price differently?

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Machined to the real line. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
