Worktop templating in Forestdale

A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.

Forestdale kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1960s-70s planned estate housinglink-detached houseflat-roofed terraceintegral-garage detached

Dense concrete and blockwork mean the wall cannot be chased back or packed out, so the stone carries the scribe. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

A single-period estate of link-detached and terraced houses with a distinctive layout: a narrow kitchen alongside the integral garage, usually a galley of 3m with a hatch or door through to the dining area. Owners frequently take the garage into the kitchen to gain width.

Pedestrian-first layout with footpath networks separated from the roads, garage courts and parking areas set away from the houses, so the carry from the van is longer than it looks on a map. When the garage is absorbed into the kitchen the two floor slabs sit at different levels, so the new units get packed and the worktop line has to be set as one plane across both.

Rear access through a garden or a shared path means long pieces can usually come in whole from the back. Carcass heights are read individually, since legs bottoming out on concrete mean the units do not share one plane. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1960s-70s planned estate housing, link-detached house, flat-roofed terrace and integral-garage detached. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Carcass height varying along the run - the tops of the units are not one plane once the legs bottom out on a concrete floor, and that has to be picked up at template stage rather than on fitting day.

What gets asked for here

Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Appliances on site, not on order.

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop installation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

True everywhere, stated once

A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Questions

Worktop templating in Forestdale

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Forestdale?

Yes. Forestdale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR0. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Forestdale change how worktop templating works?

Many have been extended at the rear since being sold, so the kitchen is half original and half newer with a floor junction between the two. Unit height is the other issue: legs sit on an uneven screed or hard concrete with no give, so the laser reads the top of every carcass rather than assuming they share a height. Two to three hours, once the units are in. When the garage is absorbed into the kitchen the two floor slabs sit at different levels, so the new units get packed and the worktop line has to be set as one plane across both.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Forestdale?

Pedestrian-first layout with footpath networks separated from the roads, garage courts and parking areas set away from the houses, so the carry from the van is longer than it looks on a map. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you do much worktop templating around Forestdale?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Forestdale kitchens the same size price differently?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Every base unit fixed to the wall, packed and levelled with the laser, and any dry-lining or patching completed - the template reads the wall face it is given, so that has to be the finished face. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. No stone is cut from a plan.
