Worktop templating in Forest Gate
A digital template plotting the room as it really is, taken once your units are fitted, fixed and level.
Forest Gate kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Two to three hours on site with a laser, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. The room as it is, to the millimetre.
This is side-return territory: the wider Victorian houses get the side return infilled and the kitchen becomes a bright room with a 3.5m run under a rooflight plus a 2m island with a hob and downdraught. Specifications skew towards larger islands and matching upstands because the room is on show from the garden.
Parts of the area are a conservation area with restrictions on street frontage alterations, and the residential roads are permit-controlled with modal filters on some crossings that force a specific approach.
The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian villa, conservation-area terrace, Edwardian terrace and small new-build block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered from the Essex patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Side-return kitchens have one wall that is brand new and one that is 120 years old, and the old one is never straight over a 3.5m run.

Getting stone into the room
Most houses have a side alley, but conservation-area boundary walls often make it too tight to pass an island slab, so it goes through the house.
The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The laser records it along with everything else.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop design & quotation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Questions
Worktop templating in Forest Gate
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Forest Gate?
Yes. Forest Gate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E7. It is run from the Essex side, covering Essex & East London. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Forest Gate change how worktop templating works?
Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. No stone is ever cut from a plan. Side-return kitchens have one wall that is brand new and one that is 120 years old, and the old one is never straight over a 3.5m run.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Forest Gate?
Parts of the area are a conservation area with restrictions on street frontage alterations, and the residential roads are permit-controlled with modal filters on some crossings that force a specific approach. Most houses have a side alley, but conservation-area boundary walls often make it too tight to pass an island slab, so it goes through the house. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The laser records it along with everything else. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Do you do much worktop templating around Forest Gate?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Appliances on site, not on order. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
Why do two Forest Gate kitchens the same size price differently?
An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the laser plots the intermediate points. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
