A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Peninsulas here nearly always end at a set of garden doors, so the end panel and overhang have to clear the door swing, which is worth checking at template rather than on fit day.

Short front drives that take one car, so the van usually parks half on the road, and side gates that are just about wide enough if the bins are moved first. Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for. A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. No stone is cut from a plan.
