What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terraceEdwardian terracePurpose-built 1930s flat

Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.

Two-storey terraces where the standard project is filling the side return to give a kitchen about 3.5m wide, with cabinets along the flank and a narrow 1.6m to 2m island or a peninsula.

Streets are permit-controlled with narrow carriageways, and the railway embankment and Garratt Lane traffic limit approach routes. Houses on the smaller streets stay galley-only because the return is too shallow to gain useful width.

Cornice, picture rails and deep skirting survive in converted rooms, so the run stands off the wall and the back edge follows the units rather than the plaster. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace and Purpose-built 1930s flat. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Side-return roofs here often bring a downpipe or a boiler flue through the new flank wall, so the run gets a notch or a shortened piece that has to be picked up at template, not at fit.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop templating comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

The shape of the run

A galley run down a side-return extension usually measures longer than a slab will give in one length, so a join is designed in from the start rather than discovered. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Height change is checked before we cut.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Earlsfield

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Earlsfield?

Yes. Earlsfield is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW18. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Earlsfield change how worktop replacement works?

The flat entrance door and the internal doorways are usually tighter than the communal stairs, which is the opposite of what most people assume. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What is under the old top is the real question. Side-return roofs here often bring a downpipe or a boiler flue through the new flank wall, so the run gets a notch or a shortened piece that has to be picked up at template, not at fit.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Earlsfield?

Streets are permit-controlled with narrow carriageways, and the railway embankment and Garratt Lane traffic limit approach routes. Front gardens are shallow, so there is barely a metre to stage a slab before the door. A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Do you do much worktop replacement around Earlsfield?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Where a single building holds several small kitchens, the work arrives as one job rather than four, and it should be cut off the same slab run so the batches genuinely match. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A plumber either side of us. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.

Why do two Earlsfield kitchens the same size price differently?

Side-return kitchens are long and narrow with one outside wall, and the wall the run sits against is often the oldest, least straight surface in the house. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Plumber either side of us.
