Worktop installation in Downe
Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.
Downe kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Wide doors, generous rooms and somewhere to park mean the joins that go in are the ones we choose, not the ones the building forces. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. One visit, our own installers.
Period village houses with thick uneven walls, deep window reveals and low ceilings. Kitchens are compact and often L-shaped around a chimney breast, with a freestanding range in the old fireplace opening and a butler sink under the window.
Walls in Downe cottages bow noticeably along their length, so we template with a full-length rigid pattern rather than laser alone, otherwise the scribe will be wrong at one end. Narrow lanes with no pavement, parked cars on both sides and low overhanging trees, plus a conservation area where you cannot leave a van blocking the road for long.
Doorways are low and narrow, which is a genuine constraint on piece length before anything else is considered. Access through the property is usually the simplest of any archetype, with wide doors and generous rooms, so we can often carry a full-length piece straight in without a planned join. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
On these streets the housing is listed village cottage, flint and brick period house, conservation-area detached and farmhouse. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced.
The carry distance from the van to the door, which is often long enough that the piece has to be rested and re-gripped part way.

True everywhere, stated once
Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Worktop installation in Downe
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Downe on your patch?
Yes. Downe is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR6. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Downe be any different from anywhere else?
A period cottage has low ceilings, thick rubble-filled walls and a floor that has never been level, and the worktop is the thing that has to look straight. What costs time is the distance from where the van can park to the door, often down a long drive or across gravel, so we plan the carry with enough hands and board the route where it crosses gravel or lawn. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Walls in Downe cottages bow noticeably along their length, so we template with a full-length rigid pattern rather than laser alone, otherwise the scribe will be wrong at one end.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Downe?
Narrow lanes with no pavement, parked cars on both sides and low overhanging trees, plus a conservation area where you cannot leave a van blocking the road for long. Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.
Is worktop installation common in Downe?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. What moves the number on a quote around here?
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Downe?
A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. Eased in, never forced. Give us the hardest, shortest approach to the door you can, clear of parked cars, and warn us of any soft ground, steps or gravel on the route. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
