Worktop replacement in Cheam

Taking out a tired laminate worktop and fitting stone on the units you already have, in a single day.

Cheam kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s mock-Tudor detachedEdwardian houseconservation-area cottagelarge post-war detached

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.

The most substantial family housing in the borough. Large 1930s detached houses with rear extensions producing kitchen-diners of 6m or more, islands over 2.5m with a breakfast overhang, separate utilities and often a second sink and a boiling tap.

Wide roads with generous in-and-out drives and space to unload off the highway, though the village conservation area itself is tight with loading restrictions near the parade.

A semi has a side passage, and whether it is wide enough to carry a piece flat and turn it in at the back door is the first thing worth measuring. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. What is under the old top is the real question.

On these streets the housing is 1930s mock-Tudor detached, Edwardian house, conservation-area cottage and large post-war detached. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

The building, and what it does to the job

This is where the big single-piece islands go, so slab selection and vein matching across the island and the tall-unit return is discussed with the client before anything is cut.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Cheam

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Cheam?

Yes. Cheam is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM2, SM3. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Cheam change how worktop replacement works?

The party wall is the straightest surface in the house and everything else has moved away from it over a century. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Units kept, surface changed, one day. This is where the big single-piece islands go, so slab selection and vein matching across the island and the tall-unit return is discussed with the client before anything is cut.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Cheam?

Wide roads with generous in-and-out drives and space to unload off the highway, though the village conservation area itself is tight with loading restrictions near the parade. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. The strip-out is planned around it. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is Cheam really a worktop replacement area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Where an annexe has been built or converted, its floor and its walls are newer than the main house and behave differently under the same run. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Extended households run kitchens hard, and that pushes the specification towards granite or sintered stone rather than a light quartz. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A plumber either side of us.

Why do two Cheam kitchens the same size price differently?

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the laser plots the intermediate points. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Sound carcasses are the condition.
