What the kitchens here are actually like

Georgian and early Victorian villaVictorian terraceLarge postwar estateInterwar block

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.

The conservation-area villas have deep plans where kitchens go into the rear at ground or lower-ground level with a run plus a freestanding block, while the surrounding estates have standardised flat kitchens with a fixed sink and a boxed riser.

Many villas are subdivided, so a single building can hold three different kitchen sizes. Villa properties have railed front steps and a lower-ground area entrance that is the only realistic way in for stone. Estate blocks have secure entry, narrow lifts and shared stairs, and the parking courts sit away from the entrances. Subdivided villas have kitchens fitted into rooms with original cornice and skirting, so the back edge has to be scribed around a skirting that is often 20mm proud at the bottom.

Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. The day is planned backwards from the hall. That is the shape of the day.

The buildings themselves are mostly Georgian and early Victorian villa, Victorian terrace, Large postwar estate and Interwar block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The hallway turn and the door width, which cap the longest single piece we can physically get to the kitchen regardless of what the run measures.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Getting stone into the room

Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.

Getting stone into a Stockwell kitchen

Estate blocks have secure entry, narrow lifts and shared stairs, and the parking courts sit away from the entrances. Villa properties have railed front steps and a lower-ground area entrance that is the only realistic way in for stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Stockwell

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Stockwell on your patch?

Yes. Stockwell is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW9, SW8. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop installation in Stockwell be any different from anywhere else?

Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. The slow parts are slow for a reason. Subdivided villas have kitchens fitted into rooms with original cornice and skirting, so the back edge has to be scribed around a skirting that is often 20mm proud at the bottom.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Stockwell?

Estate blocks have secure entry, narrow lifts and shared stairs, and the parking courts sit away from the entrances. Villa properties have railed front steps and a lower-ground area entrance that is the only realistic way in for stone. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

Do you do much worktop installation around Stockwell?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. Sealed before we leave.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Stockwell?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. It is the slow part of the day and it should be. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
