Worktop installation in Old Oak and College Park

Fitting day: protected route, back edges scribed to the real wall line, joins pulled flush, sink and hob sealed.

Old Oak and College Park kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

late Victorian railway terraceinterwar terracepostwar low-rise flatsnew development on former railway land

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. The route is walked before the first lift.

Newer flats on the redeveloped land follow the standard developer plan with a 3m run plus a small breakfast bar, and the finishes are being upgraded from builder-grade composite as first owners move in.

The area is boxed in by railway lines, the canal and the A40, so there are only a handful of ways in and construction traffic for the wider regeneration regularly reroutes them - check the route the morning of, not the week before. The College Park terraces are modest railway housing with rear kitchens of 2.2-2.8m, often still with the original back addition and a step down to the garden door.

A bay-fronted terrace has a long hall running past the stairs to the kitchen, so the hall turn caps the piece length before the run length does. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to late Victorian railway terrace, interwar terrace, postwar low-rise flats and new development on former railway land. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Access here fails on the approach rather than the property, so confirm the road is open before the van leaves the yard.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

The shape of the run

Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Dry-lay first, always.

Getting stone into the room

On the older terraces the streets are narrow with parking both sides and no loading bays at all.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Old Oak and College Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Old Oak and College Park?

Yes. Old Oak and College Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW10. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham. Where an event closes the road entirely, the van cannot be moved once it is in, which is a different problem from not being able to park at all. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Old Oak and College Park change how worktop installation works?

The rear wall is usually a single brick thick and has been rendered, patched and re-rendered, so it bows in and out along the length of the run. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. That is the shape of the day. Access here fails on the approach rather than the property, so confirm the road is open before the van leaves the yard.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Old Oak and College Park?

The area is boxed in by railway lines, the canal and the A40, so there are only a handful of ways in and construction traffic for the wider regeneration regularly reroutes them - check the route the morning of, not the week before. On the older terraces the streets are narrow with parking both sides and no loading bays at all. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around.

Do you do much worktop installation around Old Oak and College Park?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Developer-fitted kitchens come with thin cam-lock carcasses, which are fine under laminate and want bracing before stone goes on them. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly.

Why do two Old Oak and College Park kitchens the same size price differently?

Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
